A biotechnology company is a company whose products or services primarily use biotechnology methods for their production, design or delivery. The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity defines ‘biotechnology’ as: “Any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use.” In other words, biotechnology can be defined as the mere application of technical advances in life science to develop commercial products.
For thousands of years, humankind has used biotechnology in medicine, agriculture, and food production. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, biotechnology has expanded to include new and diverse sciences such as recombinant gene techniques, genomics, applied immunology, and development of pharmaceutical therapies and diagnostic tests.
Biotechnology is also dependent on knowledge and methods from outside the sphere of biology including: bioprocess engineering, bioinformatics, a new brand of computer science, biorobotics and chemical engineering.
