The source of the data contains Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC). CDIAC has served as the primary climate-change data and information analysis center of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) since 1982.

This dataset is one of the three datasets that offers cleaned, organized and combined data about CO2 emissions from 1751 to 2014 at country and global level. In the same time starting with 1950 United Nations became one of the most important data source.

The data contained in this dataset is based on publications about fossil fuel production and trade by nation and year. The collected raw data were digitized and CO2 emission calculations were made resulting estimated data about CO2 emissions. In the same time starting with 1950, data is based on UN statistics and are in a few cases, supplemented by other sources and estimates, where these have been subjected to professional scrutiny and debate, became sources of information. In the same time CDIAC provides to UN estimated data about countries that are not listed in Annex 1 of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (treaty). CO2 emissions estimated quantities are in thousand of metric tons of Carbon. The estimates for which raw data were missing are represented by string of zero length.
