Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System Gender Restriction
The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System age restriction dataset lists represented codes that TRICARE (formerly known as the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services – CHAMPUS) recognizes with gender restrictions. The TRICARE contractors need to make sure their gender file matches what is on the list or it could result in TRICARE Encounter Data (TED) Records failure.

Description
The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS, often pronounced by its acronym as “hick picks”) is a set of health care procedure codes based on the American Medical Association’s Current Procedural Terminology. HCPCS (often pronounced hickpicks) stands for the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System. It was established in 1978 as a way to standardize identification of medical services, supplies and equipment. There are two sets of codes. This is a list of Procedure Codes that either have or had Age Restrictions as of July 2015. This list was implemented in this format as of October 1, 2007. All dates on or after September 30, 2007 are the dates when a Procedure Code either became restricted (Restriction Effective Date) or ceased being restricted (Restriction Termination Date).
All dates before September 30, 2007 are the dates when the restricted Procedure Code itself either became valid or was terminated. The first, or Level I, code set is a five-digit numeric code that contains the Physicians Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) maintained by the American Medical Association. The CPT is comprised of descriptive terms and identifying codes used primarily for billing for services provided by physicians and other healthcare professionals. The second code set, or Level II, is a code set for medical services not included in Level I, such as durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies. These codes are alpha-numeric in that they begin with a single letter, such as an E or K in the case of durable medical equipment, followed by four numbers..
