Description
The dataset is provided by OECD (The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) whose mission is to promote policies that will improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world. OECD’s work is based on continued monitoring of events in member countries as well as outside OECD area, and includes regular projections of short and medium-term economic developments. The OECD Secretariat collects and analyses data, after which committees discuss policy regarding this information, the Council makes decisions, and then governments implement recommendations. The OECD Health Datasets offers the most comprehensive source of comparable statistics on health and health systems across OECD countries. It is an essential tool to carry out comparative analyses and draw lessons from international comparisons of diverse health systems.
Discharge is defined as the release of a patient who stayed at least one night in hospital. Hospital discharges and the average length of stay are important indicators of hospital activities. The inclusion and exclusion criteria for hospital discharges have been the following:
– Inclusion criteria
– Discharges from all hospitals, including general hospitals, mental health hospitals, and other specialized hospitals
– Deaths in hospital
– Transfers to another hospital
– Discharges of healthy newborns
– Exclusion criteria
– Transfers to other care units within the same hospital
Average length of stay (ALOS) is calculated by dividing the number of bed-days by the number of discharges during the year. A bed-day is a day during which a person is confined to a bed and in which the patient stays overnight in a hospital. Day cases (patients admitted for a medical procedure or surgery in the morning and released before the evening) should be excluded. According to the methodology the length of stay of a patient should be counted as the date of discharge minus the date of admission (for example, a patient admitted on the 25th and discharged on the 26th should be counted as 1 day). The inclusion and exclusion criteria used for average length of stay are as follows:
– Inclusion criteria
– ALOS in all hospitals, including general hospitals, mental health hospitals and other specialized hospitals
– ALOS for healthy newborns
– Exclusion criteria
– Transfers to other care units within the same hospital
The list of diagnostic categories is based on the International Shortlist for Hospital Morbidity Tabulation (ISHMT).
Time series are completed based on national data for selected years.
Breaks in the time-related continuity of data on which the calculated indicators values are based are specified in the content of dataset.
