US Mortality Rates for Specific Respiratory Disease Type

$199 / year

This dataset contains estimates for respiratory disease-specific age-standardized mortality rates for specific respiratory disease types at the county level for each state, the District of Columbia, and the United States as a whole for 1980-2014 (quinquennial), as well as the changes in rates during this period.

Complexity

This dataset contains the age-standardized mortality rate for both sexes combined (deaths per 100,000 population) by respiratory disease type and sex at the county level for each state, the District of Columbia, and the United States as a whole for 1980-2014, as well as the changes in rates for each location during this period.

The data on this dataset was from study results were published in JAMA in September 2017 in “Trends and patterns of differences in chronic respiratory disease mortality among US counties, 1980–2014.”

This study was conducted to answer the spatial and temporal trends in chronic respiratory disease mortality among US counties from 1980 to 2014. IHME research produced estimates for age-standardized mortality rates by county from chronic respiratory diseases. The estimates were generated using de-identified death records from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS); population counts from the U.S. Census Bureau, NCHS, and the Human Mortality Database; the cause list from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD); and the application of small area estimation models.

Specific respiratory disease type include Chronic respiratory diseases, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Pneumoconiosis, Silicosis, Asbestosis, Coal workers pneumoconiosis, Other pneumoconiosis, Asthma, Interstitial lung disease and pulmonary sarcoidosis, Other chronic respiratory diseases.

Results of this study showed that mortality rates due to chronic respiratory diseases varied substantially among counties in all years. Between 1980 and 2014, chronic respiratory disease mortality increased by 29.7% (95% uncertainty interval, 25.5%-33.8%) overall, but this trend varied by county, sex, and chronic respiratory disease type.

In conclusion, between 1980 and 2014, there were important differences in chronic respiratory disease mortality among US counties.
