Africa Educational Attainment Admin 1 2000 to 2015
This dataset provides estimates for average years of educational attainment for women of reproductive age (15 to 49), women ages 20-24, and equivalent male age groups at the 5×5 km-level in 51 countries in Africa between 2000 to 2015.

The data are estimates produced using data on educational attainment and geographical locations from censuses, several household survey series, including the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) and Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS), and other country‐specific surveys. This dataset includes aggregated estimates of educational attainment for each country at the first administrative divisions.
Educational attainment for women of reproductive age has been linked to improved maternal and child health specifically reduced child and maternal mortality, lower fertility and improved reproductive health. However, analyses of educational attainment are only available at the national level, resulting to obscure patterns in educational attainment at the subnational level. In addition, evidence suggests that there are wide disparities between the urban and rural populations in Africa raising questions about where the majority of progress towards the education targets of the Sustainable Development Goals is occurring in African countries.
In the study titled, “Mapping local variation in educational attainment across Africa”, within-country inequalities on educational attainment were explored by predicting years of schooling across five by five-kilometer grids, generating estimates of average educational attainment by age and sex at subnational levels.
In conclusion, there is still a substantial difference between locations and sexes in terms of educational attainment in Africa despite the progress in attainment from 2000 to 2015 across Africa. The disparity has widened across African countries particularly in Sahel.
These high-resolution, comparable estimates improve the ability of decision-makers to plan the precisely targeted interventions that will be necessary to deliver progress during the era of the Sustainable Development Goals.
