Motor Vehicle Safety Data
The dataset contains information on the motor vehicle fatalities on U.S. roads with number of fatalities, crashes, number of injured persons and miles covered by vehicles. National Transportation Statistics presents statistics on the U.S. transportation system, including its physical components, safety record, economic performance, the human and natural environment, and national security.

Description
The Highway Statistics Series consists of annual reports containing analyzed statistical information on motor fuel, motor vehicle registrations, driver licenses, highway user taxation, highway mileage, travel, and highway finance. Most highway data are submitted by the States directly to FHWA. Each State’s data is analyzed for completeness, reasonableness, consistency, and compliance with data reporting instructions contained in “A Guide to Reporting Highway Statistics”. While the Office of Highway Policy Information of FHWA is responsible for preparation of this publication, a number of the statistical summaries are prepared by other units within the FHWA This dataset contains information on motor vehicle fatalities and fatal crashes, based on data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). Crash and injury statistics are based on data from the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS) General Estimates System (GES). The NASS GES is a probability based sample of police-reported crashes from 60 locations across the country, from which estimates of national totals for injury and property-damage-only crashes are derived. Transportation’s safety record, giving data on accidents, crashes, fatalities, and injuries for each transportation mode and hazardous materials. Compiled and published by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), National Transportation Statistics presents information on the U.S. transportation system, including its physical components, safety record, economic performance, energy use, and environmental impacts.
Motor vehicle travel is a major means of transportation in the United States, providing an unparalleled degree of mobility. Yet for all its advantages, motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of death for children age 10 and young people 16 to 23 in 2015. The mission of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is to reduce deaths, injuries, and economic losses from motor vehicle crashes. A downward trend is most pronounced with respect to highest-severity crashes, which declined 16.8 percent over that decade. However, the number of fatal crashes have increased 7.0 percent from 2014 to 2015. There was also a 4.1-percent increase in non-fatal injury crashes, a 3.7-percent increase in property-damage-only crashes, and a 3.8 overall increase in the total police-reported crashes. This was a statistically significant increase in the number of non-fatal crashes from 2014 to 2015.

Fatalities | Number of fatalities. Fatalities data prior to 1975 have been adjusted to reflect the Fatality Analysis Reporting System's definition of a fatal crash as one that involves a motor vehicle on a trafficway, which results in the death of a vehicle occupant or a nonmotorist within 30 days of the crash. | integer | level : Ratio |
Injured_Persons | Number of injured persons | integer | level : Ratio |
Crashes | Crashes are the rounded sum of fatal crashes, an actual count from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, and injury crashes and property damage only crashes, which are estimates from the National Automotive Sampling System-General Estimates System. | integer | level : Ratio |
