Trends in Hip and Knee Joint Replacement Procedures USBJI 1991-2010

This dataset shows the trend over the last 2 decades in terms of the growing cases of hip and knee joint replacement procedures that translate to more funding from the United States government for the growing elderly population. As the US population continues to age in the next 25 years, Hip and Knee Joint replacement and revision procedures will increase because they are most prevalent in the older segments of the population.

Description

At the end of the decade, the multiple associations of health providers treating musculoskeletal diseases realized the work had only begun, and the United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI), a part of the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health, was created.

This dataset shows the estimated trends in hip replacement procedures from 1991 to 2010 show a steady increase in all types of replacements, with total hip replacements more than doubling by 2010. Growth is slowest in partial hip replacements. The ratio of revision hip to total hip replacements hovers around 20% for most years. The years 2006 and 2007 showed anomaly data for revision hip replacements in both datasets.

Revision of Hip ReplacementAll Hip Replacement ProceduresA significant jump in the number of hip revision procedures was found between the 2004 and the 2006/2007 data. The increase was similar in both the NHDS and NIS data sets, indicating the increase may have occurred; however, the 2010/2011 data indicates it was an error.
