This dataset contains estimates for cardiovascular disease-specific age-standardized mortality rates for specific cardiovascular disease types at the county level for each state, the District of Columbia, and the United States as a whole for 1980-2014 (quinquennial), as well as the changes in rates during this period.

This dataset contains the age-standardized mortality rate for both sexes combined (deaths per 100,000 population) by cardiovascular disease type and sex at the county level for each state, the District of Columbia, and the United States as a whole for 1980-2014, as well as the changes in rates for each location during this period.

The data on this dataset was from study results were published in JAMA in May 2017 in “Trends and patterns of geographic variations in cardiovascular mortality among US counties, 1980–2014.”

This study was conducted to answer the trends and differences in cardiovascular disease mortality rates among US counties from 1980 to 2014. IHME research used de-identified death records from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and population counts from the U.S. Census Bureau, NCHS, and the Human Mortality Database and small area estimation models in order to estimate county-level mortality rates from all cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, ischemic stroke, and other types.

Specific cardiovascular disease type include Cardiovascular diseases, Rheumatic heart disease, Ischemic heart disease, Cerebrovascular disease, Ischemic stroke, Hemorrhagic stroke, Hypertensive heart disease, Cardiomyopathy and myocarditis, Atrial fibrillation and flutter, Aortic aneurysm, Peripheral vascular disease, Endocarditis, Other cardiovascular and circulatory diseases.

In this study of small area estimation models applied to death records from the National Center for Health Statistics, the difference between county-level mortality rates declined substantially over the past 35 years for both ischemic heart disease and stroke; however, large differences remained in 2014. The largest concentration of counties with high cardiovascular disease mortality extended from southeastern Oklahoma along the Mississippi River Valley to eastern Kentucky, and several cardiovascular disease conditions were clustered substantially outside the South, including atrial fibrillation (Northwest), aortic aneurysm (Midwest), and endocarditis (Mountain West and Alaska).

In conclusion, from 1980 to 2014, there were important changes in trends, patterns, and differences in cardiovascular disease mortality among US counties.
