US Mortality Rates for Substance Use Disorders

$447.50 / year

This dataset contains estimates for age-standardized mortality rates by county from alcohol use disorders, drug use disorders, self-harm, and interpersonal violence.

Complexity

This dataset provides estimates for age-standardized mortality rates by cause and sex at the county level for each state, the District of Columbia, and the United States as a whole for 1980-2014. Also included are changes in rates during this period and counties with the highest and lowest mortality rates for each cause in 2014.

The estimates were generated using de-identified death records from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS); population counts from the U.S. Census Bureau, NCHS, and the Human Mortality Database; the cause list from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD); and the application of small area estimation models.

The data on this dataset was from study results published in JAMA in March 2018 in “Trends and patterns of geographic variation in mortality from substance use disorders and intentional injuries among US counties, 1980–2014.”

Specific substance abuse disorder is alcohol use and drug use disorders while intentional injuries include self-harm and interpersonal violence.

Results of this study showed that mortality due to alcohol use disorders, drug use disorders, self-harm, and interpersonal violence varied widely among US counties, both in terms of levels of mortality and trends. These estimates may be useful to inform efforts to target prevention, diagnosis, and treatment to improve health and reduce inequalities.
