This dataset contains information on the proportion by age, total number, male and female and sex of adults of adults diagnosed with diabetes, collected from the system of health-related telephone surveys, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), conducted in more than 400,000 patients, from 50 states in the US, the District of Columbia and three US territories.

Complexity

The data was collected by monthly telephone surveys in adult population through the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Is presented with the prevalence of the existing cases and rates per 100, the estimates, if shown, meet the requirements for statistical reliability. The estimates were age-adjusted using the age groups 18-44, 45-64, 65-74 and older than 75 years.
The data collected was based on the knowledge of the patient about their medical condition, therefore this does not reflect the approximate of one-fourth people with diabetes that are unaware of their condition. The diabetes surveillance system does not distinguish between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, however, type 2 diabetes is about 90 to 90% of the cases and trends in this type of diabetes are likely to be similar to the total estimate.
The data source does not provide reliable estimates for American Indians or Alaska Natives, but includes prevalence estimates for Hispanics and Asians.
The “crude” rate is the raw or unadjusted estimate. The age-adjusted rate is an estimate to compare populations that have different age distributions.
The age-adjusted rate is an estimate to compare populations that have different age distributions.
