Hospital Complication Rates for Hip and Knee Replacement Patients

$447.50 / year

This dataset includes provider data for the hip/knee complication measure, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) measures of serious complications, and 30-day death rates. It has also been enriched with ICD-10 and HCPCS codes with their descriptions.

Complexity

This hospital compare dataset reports risk-standardized complication measures for elective primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) and/or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures. The goal of the measures is to improve the quality of care delivered to patients undergoing elective primary THA and/or TKA procedures. It assesses a broad set of healthcare activities that affect patients’ well-being. The outcome of the measures captures eight different complications, each within a specific and clinically meaningful time period, during which the outcome can be attributed to the hospital that performed the procedure.

The dataset provides information on the quality of care hospitals are providing to their patients, and inform providers of opportunities to improve care and strengthen incentives for quality improvement. This data allows patients and consumers to better select hospitals at which to have their surgical procedure, and directly compare performance measure information related to hip and knee related procedures. The dataset identifies health care complication rates of over 4,000 hospitals, including acute care hospitals, critical access hospitals, children’s hospitals, VA Medical Centers, and hospital outpatient departments.

Compared_to_NationalThe hospital’s interval estimate is compared to the national hip/knee complication rate.If the interval estimate includes the national observed hip/knee complication rate, the hospital’s performance is in the “no different than national rate” category. If the entire interval estimate is below the national observed hip/knee complication rate, then the hospital is performing “better than national rate”.If the entire interval estimate is above the national observed hip/knee complication rate, its performance is “worse than national rate”.Hospitals with fewer than 25 eligible cases are placed into a separate category that indicates that the hospital doesn't have enough cases to reliably tell how well the hospital is performing.string-

Measure_Start_DateThe first day the data measures were collected. Complications were measured within specific times because complications over a longer period may be impacted by factors outside the hospitals’ control like other complicating illnesses, patients’ own behavior, or care provided to patients after discharge.
